Oleg’s build of the TAPKR pr 941 “Akula” in 1:350 scale by Dragon is quite a treat to look at. The first thing that catches my eye is the neatness of the construction. The paintwork is really well done, with crisp lines between the black and red sections that make the submarine look both sleek and imposing. The attention to detail is remarkable, and despite the clean build, the model still captures the massive feel of its real-life counterpart.
Thinking about the history of the “Akula,” these submarines were a product of Cold War ingenuity, designed to quietly patrol the depths. They were among the largest submarines ever built, which makes this model all the more impressive as it captures that scale in a smaller form. The proportions seem just right, and the presentation on the wooden stand adds a classy touch.
Oleg’s skills shine through in how the small details are handled. From the periscopes to the tiny railings, everything seems meticulously placed. It’s these little touches that elevate the model beyond a simple replica. I can’t help but admire the subtle way he’s highlighted certain areas without overdoing it. It’s like a nod to the real submarine’s understated but formidable presence.
The clean look of the model might make one think it’s a new vessel ready for its maiden voyage, and that creates a nice visual narrative. I find myself wondering about how these subs were quiet giants in the ocean, and apparently, they were some of the stealthiest from their era.
What I love most about this model is the blend of precision and storytelling. Oleg’s work not only represents a technical achievement but also brings a piece of naval history to life. This model stands out for its clarity and craftsmanship, making it a fantastic centerpiece for any collection.
