Looking at Dmitriy Revyakin’s 1:350 scale model of the IJN “Mogami,” one of the first things that really grabs attention is the weathering effect. It’s as if this model has been through its own little battles. The subtle rust and wear on the hull showcase the ship’s character, bringing a touch of realism that I just love to see in models. It’s not overdone, just enough to make you feel like you’re looking at a model that’s lived a life on the high seas.
A little tidbit about the real “Mogami” — this cruiser was originally part of a class designed for versatility. In its 1943 modernization, it was actually converted from a conventional cruiser to a hybrid aircraft carrier. How cool is that? They could catapult planes straight from the deck, which was pretty innovative for its time. It’s these unique transformations in naval history that always intrigue me.
What makes this particular model stand out is how it captures that dual identity of the “Mogami” — both fighter and carrier. It’s a reminder of the ship’s unique role in history. Plus, this Tamiya set, with its intricate parts and great fit, gives builders a brilliant base to unleash their creativity.
