The first thing that catches my eye about Aleksey Zaharov’s build of the Tamiya 1:35 scale Type 97 Chi-Ha is the impressive weathering. It’s clear from the rust stains on the tracks and the subtle dirt effects that there’s a real attention to detail here. The weathered look gives the model a sense of history, like it’s just rolled in from the battlefield. I think it adds a layer of authenticity to the build, making it more than just a display piece.

Speaking of history, the real Type 97 Chi-Ha has an interesting backstory. From what I know, it was a mainstay in the Imperial Japanese Army during the early years of World War II. It might not have been the most heavily armored or powerful tank, but it played its part across various Pacific campaigns. The Chi-Ha’s design was considered advanced for its time in Japan, despite being outmatched by Allied armor later in the war.

What makes Aleksey’s model stand out is the way this history is captured through the build. The combination of meticulous painting and detailed weathering brings the Type 97 to life. It’s a great reminder that even models on a shelf can tell stories — and this one does it beautifully.
