I’m really excited to share my thoughts on Sergey Kulakov’s build of the McDonnell Douglas F-4J Phantom II, crafted at 1:35 scale by Tamiya. What’s immediately striking in Sergey’s model is how the weathering gives it a lived-in, operational look. The subtle dirt streaks and faded markings make it feel like this jet is just back from a grueling mission. It’s amazing how these touches can transform a model from something static into something that feels alive.
The F-4J Phantom II has such an interesting background. It was a workhorse in the skies during the Vietnam War, playing multiple roles from air superiority to ground attack. Its rugged design was key to its versatility, and it remained in service for decades, which shows just how much trust was placed in its capabilities.
Looking at this model, what really makes it special is the way it captures not just the look, but the essence of this iconic aircraft. The combination of Tamiya’s detailed kit and Sergey’s skillful finishing makes this a model worth paying attention to. It’s a great example of how much character you can bring into a small-scale representation of military history.
