Taking a look at the P-40E War Hawk model, crafted at a 1:35 scale by Andrey Kraskin and coming from Trumpeter, the first thing that strikes me is the sharpness of the shark-mouth nose art. The paint job is consistent, and those decals are perfectly aligned, bringing that fierce look of the War Hawk to life. The weathering here is subtle yet effective, adding depth without going overboard.
A bit about the real deal — the P-40 was a workhorse in various theaters during WWII, most notably with the Flying Tigers. It was known for its ruggedness and ability to take damage and keep on flying. Seeing this model, you get a sense of that functionality, the no-nonsense design, perhaps a nod to how the real aircraft stood up in tough conditions.
The construction is solid. I admire the detailing in the cockpit area—it’s always a challenge to get those tiny elements just right, but it looks like Andrey nailed it. The panel lines are well-defined, and that slight shading makes them pop, enhancing the overall authenticity of the model.
Personally, the balance of weathering on the landing gear and exhaust areas is my favorite aspect. It hints at a used, operational aircraft without making it look neglected. I do wonder if Andrey aimed for a depiction of one on active duty, catching moments before a mission.
On an interesting note, the P-40 was not the fastest or most advanced plane at the time. Still, its contribution was significant due to the courageous pilots and mechanics who made the most of it under various flags.
In conclusion, what draws me in is the way this model captures both the toughness and spirited design of the P-40E. It’s a reminder of why this aircraft is such an iconic figure in aviation history.
