When I first set my eyes on this Kawasaki Ki-45 Kai Toryu model, the paintwork immediately caught my attention. The way the subtle shades of green and brown blend together gives it a very authentic look, almost like it’s about to take off from a WWII airstrip. The smoothness of the airbrush application by Shtayner is really something, with precise lines and a touch of finesse.
The Ki-45, for those who might not know, was a twin-engine heavy fighter used by Japan in WWII. These planes were actually quite agile for their size and played a significant role in defending against Allied bombers. Fun fact: The Ki-45 was one of Japan’s few aircraft equipped to handle night operations, which makes it quite a cool piece of aviation history to replicate in a model like this.
I’m also impressed by the neat craftsmanship around the cockpit and landing gear. There’s a real attention to detail, from the small antennas to the tiny decals that add character to the model. Shtayner’s choice of weathering is worth mentioning too. It’s subtle but gives the model a slightly worn look, like it has seen a mission or two, without going overboard.
Personally, I enjoy how the propellers stand out. Their dark, almost wooden look against the lighter body makes them pop. It’s little details like these that bring the model to life. I wonder if Shtayner intended to portray it post-mission, awaiting another sortie.
What really makes this model interesting is how it strikes a balance between historical accuracy and artistry. The care put into replicating each element of the Ki-45 is evident, and it’s these little touches that make it not just a model, but a miniature piece of history. The simplicity of the weathering, combined with the overall clean build, gives it a charm that keeps you looking back.
