Looking at Anatoliy Arestov’s build of the MiG-3 in 1:48 scale from Trumpeter, the first thing that strikes me is the clean finish. The early version of this aircraft has been a favorite among WWII enthusiasts, and here, it really comes to life. The paint looks great with those classic Soviet red stars—so bold against the green. The panel lines have just the right depth, adding to that realistic feel.
The MiG-3, from what I’ve read, was developed for high-altitude battles during WWII. Though it initially struggled at lower altitudes, it became a pilot’s favorite when facing high-flying bombers. I can only imagine how this model captures a piece of that sky-high history.
Anatoliy has clearly paid attention to every detail, especially evident in the cockpit area. The transparency of the canopy is impressive; it’s crystal clear so you can peek inside. It brings a certain dynamic to the whole setup, making it look almost ready to leap into the clouds.
One thing I wonder about is whether Anatoliy intended it to depict a fresh-out-of-the-factory look—it’s so clean and polished. There’s not much weathering, which in this case, works wonders. The pristine look probably matches how these aircraft appeared when they first rolled out.
An interesting tidbit about the MiG-3 is that it was one of the few Soviet fighters that effectively engaged German reconnaissance aircraft at high altitudes. That altitude advantage might be why this aircraft retained its place in history despite early challenges.
What I love most about this model is how it balances simplicity and detail. It feels like a frozen moment in time, capturing the essence of the MiG-3 without overcomplicating things. The simplistic elegance of this build is what makes it stand out for me.
