The I-16 tip 5 “Svobodu ugnetennym” model really catches the eye with its sleek green paint job and neat detailing. The first thing I noticed was the sharpness of the decals on the fuselage—Andrey did an excellent job with those, making the artwork pop against the green. It’s quite clear that a lot of effort went into making sure the lines are crisp, and the application is smooth.
From what I understand, the real I-16 was quite a game-changer for its time. It was among the first monoplanes with retractable landing gear, giving it an edge in maneuverability and speed during its era. That’s probably why it’s a favorite among enthusiasts; it represents a leap in aviation technology during the 1930s.
Moving into the details, Andrey’s handling of the weathering gives the model a subtle touch without overdoing it. The wear on the edges and slight marks here and there add to the realism, suggesting a well-used aircraft. The propeller and undercarriage look especially good, with just enough weathering to tell a story of many takeoffs and landings.
